DONT PLAY IN PAIN - Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Do not play sport when in PAIN. Pain does not mean there is serious injury. There are many parts to the body that are put under enormous stress during sport.

In Basketball the knees and hips are under continual stress. Players have to jump, spin, accelerate, stop on a sixpence and be able to keep this up for 4 quarters...

Have your  body treated on a regular basis, even if you are not in pain...

REMEMBER, YOUR TEAM DEPENDS ON YOU!!!

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice which is becoming increasingly popular in the West. Physical benefits range from strengthening and toning muscles, increasing flexibility, aligning the spine and improving posture. Mental and emotional benefits include calming the nervous system, alleviating stress and creating a general “feel good” feeling.

Yoga aims to balance the body and mind through poses, breathing practices, relaxation and meditation. Yoga means “union”, and the union of body/mind in turn brings balance to all aspects of our lives, enabling us to experience the peace and happiness of our true self. By calming the fluctuations of the mind, the body can re-establish natural body rhythms and the mind can focus on the task at hand.

Watch our Yoga video below.

Yoga in the Workplace

While good ergonomic design can greatly improve levels of fatigue and visual and muscular discomfort, yoga can build body awareness so that an individual can make his/her own postural adjustments to improve levels of comfort. With conscious breath control, energy levels are increased and the mind can refocus.

We design simple stretches and adapt poses and specific breathing techniques for each individual at their desk, so that each person has the skills to make adjustments when needed to prevent discomfort and mental strain. This approach is unobtrusive to other people, and increases mental clarity and concentration without distracting from the work at hand.

We also offer group yoga programs for employees either early morning, lunchtime or when required. Participating in a yoga class brings all the yoga benefits and in our experience positively impacts on employee relationships.

Yoga and Sports Injuries

Yoga benefits elite sports people in 2 main ways in that speeds up the healing process in the case of an injury, and when practised regularly helps to prevent future injuries.

We design specific yoga stretches and movements, to complement other treatments for an injury. We plan a program to assist the body to return to health, and with monitoring, prepare an ongoing program to maintain strength and flexibility of all the muscle groups to help prevent future injuries.

The program includes breathing and relaxation practices that target the mental and emotional issues common to specific sports.

Depending on the sport, specific muscles groups do most of the work and can become stressed, while other sets of muscles are underused and can tighten or weaken, which increases the risk of injury.

Yoga works to balance the body, and create a mind that is focused on the moment.
